Associate Professor (Head of the lab)

Dr Georgios Michalakopoulos holds a BA in Translation from the Ionian University, an MA in Middle East Politics from the University of Durham (UK) and a PhD in Economic Geography from the Ionian University. He has worked as an International Relations advisor and has lectured extensively on issues relating to Turkish politics and society. His research interests focus on Turkey and more specifically on the developments taking place within Turkish society and politics, on the relationships between politics and society, on the role of literature as a ‘mirror’ of the society and on the relationship between language and society in Turkey. Dr Michalakopoulos has participated in numerous conferences and published  articles in journals and edited volumes. He is the author of the books Coming Nearer to the Turkey we don’t know (in Greek), Bilge Karasu’s Night (in Greek). He participated in the Programme Fulbright American Studies institute on US National Security belonging to the thematic cycle “American Foreign Policy Formulation in an Era of Globalization” under the auspices of the US State Department (University of Delaware, January 2004). He is currently Associate Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting (Ionian University) and teaches modules on Turkish Literature and Civilization.

Dr Maria Tsigou holds a BA in Classics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1988), and a PhD (Hons) in Language Studies – General Linguistics and Phonetics from Paris 5 – René Descartes Sorbonne University (2000). She has taught Linguistics at undergraduate level at René Descartes University, French as a Foreign Language at postgraduate level at the Hellenic Open University, Linguistics and Translation, and French at both undregraduate and postgraduate levels at the Ionian University where she works as Assistant Professor in General Linguistics and Translation. She has also worked as an EU legislation analyst at the EU office of the Greek Ministry of Education, reviewing proposals and policy decisions (2003-2006). She was appointed as Greece’s representative in the EU Committee for Multilingualism Policy (2004-2006), maintaining her interest to the good practice of teaching foreign languages. Dr Tsigou has published a number of articles in Greek and French, and her research interests are related to Linguistics and Translation, French as a Foreign Language, Humor in Translation, Text Linguistics, Discourse Analysis, Audiovisual Translation, Languages in Contact, Language Death, Language Policies and Multilingualism in the EU. She is the author of the monograph Linguistics and Translation: an approach of the Translation Unit [in Greek].

Dr Sotirios Livas is Assistant Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting at the Ionian University. He holds a BA in Law from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1989), an MA in International Development Law and Development Studies from Panteion University (1997) and a PhD in Law and International Relations from the Ionian University (2003). He has extensive legal experience, since he practices law since 1992, specializing in administrative as well as civil law and ADR. In addition, he has an outstanding academic profile and varied teaching experience having taught, among others, International Law, International Relations, and International Relations in the Middle East, Spanish Legal Terminology to undergraduate students and French and English Terminology of EU Texts and International Relations to postgraduate students. He is currently in charge of the Placements and Internships Scheme and head of the Spanish section of the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting. He is a member of the “Hellenic Society of International Law and International Relations” and the “Mobilities Research Institute”, while he participates in the Eurolect Observatory research project. He has published articles in international journals and edited volumes; he is the author of the monograph Globalization, Nationalism and Islam and the editor of the Greek-Spanish and Spanish-Greek Dictionary of Legal Terms.

Dr Sotirios Keramidas holds a Diploma in Translation (1985) from KE.ME.DI., a BA in Translation (1989) and a PhD in Translation Studies (1999) from the Ionian University. He has taught Specialised Translation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the DFLTI since 1998. He also has extensive professional experience as freelance translator and editor since 1993. His research interests lie in the areas of technical translation, terminology and lexicography, he has published articles in edited volumes on said topics and is the author of the monograph Terminological Issues in Technical Translation. Among other things he has translated and edited Statistical Bulletins and Educational Resources for the Research Centre for Gender Equality (KETHI) in the framework of the programme Equal opportunities – Reducing gender gaps and desegregation – EQUAL ANDROMEDA and the Operational Programme for Education and Initial Vocational Training (O.P. “Education”) of the Greek Ministry of Education. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting (Ionian University).

Dr Vilelmini Sosoni holds a BA in English Language and Linguistics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1996) a DU in Translation from the University of Strasbourg (1996) an MA in Translation (1997) as well as a PhD in Translation and Text Linguistics (2004) from the University of Surrey. She has taught Specialised Translation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Surrey, the University of Westminster, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Institut Français d’ Athènes (IFA), Roehampton University and the Ionian University where she was appointed Lecturer in 2010. She also has extensive industrial experience having worked as freelance translator, editor and subtitler, as well as in-house project manager and translator. She is a member of the “Centre for Research in Translation and Transcultural Studies” and a member of the editorial board for the international journals Jostrans and Intercultural and Intersemiotic Translation. Her research interests lie in the areas of the Translation of Institutional, Legal, Political and Economic Texts, Text Linguistics and Corpus Linguistics and Translation, Machine Translation (MT) and AVT. She has participated in EuropeAid projects, translation and interpreter training projects and has published articles in international journals and edited volumes. Finally, she currently participates in the Eurolect Observatory research project and in the TraMOOC project funded under H2020-ICT-2014/H2020-ICT-2014-1 (Grant Agreement number 644333).
